Alicia Blackmore’s journey with arthritis began following the birth of her son, when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and introduced to the challenges of navigating a new chronic illness while caring for a young family. Through her treatment journey, Alicia experienced the value of compassionate, patient-centred care and was fortunate to have a healthcare team that supported both her health needs and her breastfeeding goals, helping her make informed decisions about treatment while continuing to breastfeed for as long as she wanted.
With a strong appreciation for evidence-based science and the role research plays in improving health outcomes, Alicia approached her diagnosis through a lens of learning, understanding, and seeking reliable information. Alicia completed her doctorate in Clinical Epidemiology in 2022, where she engaged in patient-oriented research and developed a deep appreciation for the value of incorporating patient voices and lived experiences into the research process. While navigating her own arthritis journey, Alicia discovered Arthritis Research Canada and was inspired by its commitment to advancing research and providing evidence-based resources for people living with arthritis. Through this connection, she learned about the Arthritis Patient Advisory Board and was drawn to the opportunity to bring her lived experience and research perspective to support patient-informed research.
Professionally, Alicia is a manager within Data and Information Services with NL Health Services, where she supports data access for researchers, healthcare partners, and other stakeholders across the province and Canada. Through this role, she has developed a strong understanding of responsible data use, research collaboration, and the importance of translating evidence into meaningful improvements for patients and communities. Alicia values the opportunity to bring together her perspectives as a patient, researcher, and health system professional to support meaningful advancements in arthritis research.
Outside of her professional and research interests, Alicia is a proud mother of two young children. Her family is her greatest source of joy, and she and her husband love creating memories together through everyday adventures close to home and travelling to explore new places.
