There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia and gout. Before medications are approved for use in these conditions, they must undergo strict testing to ensure they are safe and effective. This process of testing a drug in people is called a clinical trial.
A clinical trial is a scientific study that tests the safety and effectiveness of a medical treatment in a person with a specific condition. For example, we may study the safety and effectiveness of a new drug in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

For People with Active Ankylosing Spondylitis
|
Physicians at The Arthritis Research Centre of Canada are seeking volunteers who have been diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) to participate in a clinical research study involving an investigational study drug not yet approved by Health Canada.
Volunteers with AS who in the past have not responded or who have not tolerated standard anti-inflammatory medications, who meet criteria for entry into the study, and who consent to participation, would be randomly assigned to receive either active treatment (with an injectable study drug) or placebo (an injectable inactive substance). The chance of receiving placebo is 1 in 6. Participation in the study would involve 8 visits to the Arthritis Research Centre over 12 weeks with a possible extension study after 12 weeks.
